I think...NEIL HAMBURGER IS THE FUNNIEST COMEDIAN THE WORLD HAS SEEN, MORE THAN THAT, HE IS A GENIUS AND A REAL RARITY IN THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD. It's this rare quality that I would like to discuss here. Okay, so this may all be obvious to any fan who has followed Neil's career from the very start...but for anyone not familiar with the rise of America's Funny Man, this is for you. - Neil Hamburger began in the 1990's as a very different performer from the super-star we see today. For a start, his voice hadn't broken...the on-stage drinking hadn't taken it's toll on his vocal chords yet. (although the damage to Neil's vocal chords is not as severe as to those of Richie Valens and The Big Bopper). Another big difference was that Neil wasn't a live performer, he could only be found on recordings like "Raw Hamburger" and "Inside Neil Hamburger". ...and without wanting to destroy the myth...his material had it's own ...nieche... ...I get it and I enjoy it. ...but let's face facts, he was a bad comedian...perhaps the baddest of the bad. ...of course it should be added that he was very good at being bad. Part of his act was that he had all the phrasing, some of the timing and most of the tools of any regular stand-up comedian...but had none of the material. His 'material' was spectacularly unfunny, self-conscious and depressing. He could go a whole show without getting a single laugh. The thing is that frankly, it's probably kind of easy to be a bad comedian and mock other comedian's style and so on. For a start you don't have to write any jokes. ...I am sure no specific comedians took any offence...but in a way, it was cheap-shot. ...even if it was a work of art at being unfunny. ...However, Neil started performing live and developed his act. Then Neil transformed. He went from taking the possibly easy route of being as un-funny as possible, to writing jokes, writing very, very funny jokes. To me this is special, because in a way it justifies all his mocking of other comedian's styles...because he is now showing them the way, by being the funniest comedian of all. That's what makes him a genius. To go from worst to best. It's like if Weird Al Jankovic started writing original top 10 pop songs. ...how often has a performer transformed like that ? Michael Crawford ? Mark Walberg ? Cher as an actress maybe ? John McEnroe as an entertainer now ? Anyway, they may not be quite the same as Neil, but to listen to the first half of Neil's career and not laugh once...then to listen to the second half and laugh at everything...is remarkable. ALSO, for an act that didn't start out performing live...his amazing improvising, especially with hecklers, is genius too. A listen to "Hot February Night" proves that beyond doubt. "HOT FEBRUARY NIGHT" is the finest live comedic recording ever. Neil's interaction with the few poor souls who still don't get his humor is a wonderful part of the phenomenon. I hope Neil continues for as long as possible, continues to develop and continues to grow in popularity.
